About this event

How many senses do we have to tell us about the world around us? We think of hearing, vision, taste, touch, and smell, but we have many other senses that inform us about the world around us, as well as the world inside of us.

For example, we have a sense that provides balance, and another that informs us of pain. Some of the things the sensory systems inside our body tells us about are the amount of carbon dioxide in our blood (to adjust breathing) and the positions of our arms and legs.

Beyond these critical senses, other animals have a fascinating array of additional senses that allow them to detect electric fields, the magnetic fields of the earth, and sounds and light that are “invisible” to humans.

The Center for Lifelong Learning (CLL) is sponsoring long-time resident Dr. Arthur N. Popper’s four-session course exploring “The Five Senses and Beyond” on Tuesday, Nov 3, 10, 17 and Dec 1 at 2 p.m. in Clubhouse I. One expert guest lecturer will be included.

The four sessions will focus on:

• The five main senses and why they are important

• Vision, taste, smell, touch function and evolution

• Vestibular sense, balance, why older people may fall

• Amazing senses humans don’t have, but some animals do

Residents are asked to register and pay the $20 fee on the CLL website, (cllmd.com). For more information about registration, see the Classes and Seminars section of this edition of Leisure World News.
