About this event

On Saturday, November 21, from 2-4 p.m. join us in the Videodrome (video art space inside the Mitchell Art Museum) for a two-hour seminar discussion on Annette Baier’s 1986 seminal essay "Trust and Antitrust", originally published in the journal Ethics (Vol. 96, N0. 2: pages 231–260).

We will read this essay in relation to the videos on view in our current Videodrome exhibition: Surveilled or Seen: Sinew of Trust in the Video of Marina Abramović and Lynda Benglis.

As noted in our description of this show, Marina Abramović and Lynda Benglis — with Rest Energy (1980) and Monitor (1999), respectively — explore what it costs us to trust each other and how important it is that we do. In this way, we feel that a discussion of Baier's work, one dedicated to Trust as a concept, will uniquely enrich this dimension of their work.

If we can expect you to attend this seminar, please send us a short message to mitchellartmuseum@sjc.edu.

About the Reading

Baier's essay is widely regarded as the foundational text of contemporary philosophical ethics concerning the nature and value of trust. It is about 30 pages long, and can be accessed through Jstor or via the University of Chicago Press Journals . You may also email us to request a copy.

We look forward to welcoming you to this event!
