Johnny Falloon

There’s a stigma about Athens music: The B-52s and R.E.M. paved the way, and the acts that follow are destined to live in their shadow. Johnny Falloon begs to differ. The no-wave quartet evoke an alternate vision for the city that birthed alternative rock. With meandering saxophone, blistering guitar and drums, and sharp staccato vocals, the band is bringing the cutting-edge back home.

Since forming in a dilapidated house in 2022, Johnny Falloon has evolved from a fuzz-rock inspired trio into a more avant-garde group that mixes the propulsion of IDLES with John Coltrane’s free jazz virtuosity. Their debut album, Tell Hell I’m Not Coming [2025], is a collage of lullabies (“Little Bird”), searing roars (“Diamonds”), and frenetic epics (“Dragon Law”). It teeters between hardcore and psychedelic, with vocalist John Edmonson’s eerie and impassioned verses leading the way.

In just over two years, they’ve become a staple of the Athens scene, making a name for themselves with ear-ringing live performances. Yet their sights are set beyond their home base–with upcoming dates at SXSW and Valley of the Vapors Fest in Hot Springs, AR, they plan on spreading their southern flair far and wide. Looking toward bands like Thee Oh Sees as a blueprint, Johnny Falloon’s main goal is to keep making music together, no matter how weird it gets. – Millan Verma
