Prince George’s County released accused murderer Wilmer Antonio Echenique-Navarro—who was arrested on March 18 by ICE—after he was freed from jail when a murder case was dropped, raising concerns over the ICE detainer policy.

Maryland lawmakers passed a bill to ban ICE’s 287(g) program that lets local officers detain noncitizens—on Wednesday, nearly a dozen sheriffs spoke out against the measure, warning it could invite criminals from nearby states into Maryland.

The Senate will debate the bill next as law enforcement and state officials express strong disagreements.
