COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The first Black-run food bank in the DMV area, The Storehouse, serves over 2,000 families facing food insecurity each month and will hold its food drive on April 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Trinity Assembly of God in Latham—registration is required.  WJLA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A legislative audit found that an error in payroll records led a substitute teacher in Prince George’s County to be paid over $7 million in 2022, with the school system recovering the funds about two months later. The audit also revealed ongoing issues with payroll, procurement and employee screening—officials have since started new measures and scheduled updated inventories and contract reviews.  WTOP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Council will review the proposed FY 2026 Budget and Capital Improvements Program in a series of worksessions and public hearings at City Hall — residents are encouraged to attend and offer their comments. The meetings are set for April 14, 21, 28, 30, May 5 and May 12, all starting at 8 p.m.  City of Bowie
  • Maryland’s new representatives April McClain Delaney and Sarah Elfreth are handling over 4,000 calls a week from constituents worried about federal job cuts—many of these calls come from workers facing layoffs. They said they are helping affected employees by urging them to file appeals with unions and by explaining their options.  WJLA
  • City of Bowie Water will flush hydrants from April 7 to May 21, which may cause water to turn a bit discolored — the color should clear in about 24 hours. Residents are advised to avoid doing laundry during the flush and can get free rust remover from City Hall and Public Works.  City of Bowie
  • Police leaders in Prince George's County said cameras at school zone stop signs have cut violations by up to 50%—with initial numbers showing 1,400 daily violations dropping significantly in places like Colmar Manor and Morningside. Maryland lawmakers are now considering expanding the program into Montgomery County to further reduce traffic incidents.  WJLA
  • Maryland lawmakers continue to debate a bill to stop local police from partnering with ICE after officials mistakenly released Venezuelan national Wilmer Echenique-Navarro despite an ICE detainer. Navarro, a confirmed member of the Tren de Aragua gang—who had confessed to a murder before his confession was ruled inadmissible—has intensified the controversy as the House passed the measure and it now awaits a Senate Committee vote with six days left in session.  WJLA
