CRIME NEWS

  • Josue Vasques, who was acquitted in the 2016 trial for the death of teen Allyssa Banks, was convicted on March 28 for a murder committed in March 2023 at a Prince George’s County courthouse — state’s attorney Aisha Braveboy said he will never be free again — marking a critical legal development in keeping dangerous offenders confined.  WJLA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • PGCPS officials said that the federal government stopped honoring promised extensions for nearly $100 million in covid-era recovery funds, forcing a freeze on spending for school projects including construction, teacher training, tech updates, vaccines, and mental health services. Maryland Rep. Glenn Ivey said the decision may lead to legal action — a lawsuit is likely if funds remain unreimbursed.  WTOP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maryland lawmakers voted Wednesday to form a commission that will study and recommend reparations for slavery and racial discrimination. The 101—36 vote sent the measure to Governor Wes Moore, who said he would consider it while noting the state's tough budget conditions.  WJLA
