ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ This spring, Brood XIV cicadas will emerge in Bowie after 17 years underground and may be heard calling around trees—though they do not bite or sting. Residents are encouraged to learn about the insects to ease any concerns about the noise. WJLA
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A study by the PG County Professional Firefighters Union found that the fire department’s average response time was 9.5 minutes—5.5 minutes slower than the national standard—after only 82 of 150 new firefighter positions were filled. County leaders plan to hire additional firefighters, including 96 more by FY26, to help ease the 130-firefighter shortage. WJLA
- ➤ Prince George’s County nonprofits are scrambling after Council Chair Edward Burroughs rescinded nearly $2 million in grant funding last October due to political favoritism in awarding funds — nonprofit leaders say agencies had already planned for the money and fear the cuts may force some programs to close.
