Bowie State alumna Deidre Mathis uses her global travel experience to run Wanderstay Hostel and Boutique Hotel, leveraging strong communications skills + business savvy to welcome guests from around the world.

Her venture recently earned a grant from Beyoncé’s foundation and highlights the lasting impact of her education.

Bowie State student Widenerson Moise, a first-generation college student from Haiti, chose the campus after his athletic trainer drove him for a tour as his guidance counselor suggested, and he now excels academically, leads several clubs, and recently won the Bulldog Pitch Competition in May 2026.

Bowie State University celebrated 10 years of its SURI program on April 23 at the Student Center ballroom in Bowie.

The program, which has mentored over 800 students and supported 400 research projects with a $2.17 million investment, marked its milestone with speeches + alumni discussions.

Bowie State hosted the Proctor Lecture Series on April 22 at the James E.

Proctor Jr. Building where over 100 attendees heard education leaders discuss turning policy into measurable outcomes — the panel also highlighted an endowed scholarship for future teachers.

Two Bowie State students are researching women’s challenges in agriculture across the Caribbean and Latin America under the guidance of Dr. Lawrence McNeil (Accounting, Finance and Economics professor).

Their project examines how factors such as education, income and legal rights shape farming productivity and change traditional roles.
