- ➤ Bowie State alumna Tamani Lyn founded WOMEN OF LYN—an international nonprofit that mentors women entrepreneurs of color and offers internships to students—after starting a blog in college, and the organization now provides programs such as the Boss Academy and community workshops to build leadership. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A pedestrian was struck and killed early Friday on northbound I-95 in Prince George’s County — Maryland State Police said the victim was walking on the left shoulder when a Chevrolet pickup hit him and the driver remained at the scene as authorities continue their investigation. WJLA
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Bowie State students from the Visual Communication & Digital Media Arts program spent two weeks at LAIKA Studios this summer learning stop-motion animation skills in Portland. They practiced character design, storyboarding and production techniques—hands-on training that will help them start careers in a growing animation field. Bowie State University
- ➤ Bowie State University computer science major Anthony Middleton presented his research on an AI tool to detect phishing attacks at the 2025 SURI Symposium held from July 31—Aug. 1. His project showed that the machine learning model could spot harmful messages before they reached users. Bowie State University
- ➤ On August 18, President Aminta H. Breaux kicked off the academic year at Bowie State University by unveiling the Boldly Forward FY26–29 Strategic Plan—celebrating campus milestones while urging the community to embrace change amid national instability. The address stated that BSU remains strong and its future is bright. Bowie State University
- ➤ On Aug. 27, 2025, Bowie State University was awarded a $920,050 NSF research grant to study how fruit-eating bats affect plant health in Costa Rica—research that will collect fruits and bat droppings, grow plants, and monitor them for one year. Dr. Priscila Chaverri said the project will strengthen student learning and support international collaboration. Bowie State University
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Tim Adams, Bowie's first Black mayor and New Orleans native, recalled the challenges of Hurricane Katrina as he explained how many residents had no way to leave the storm—he noted that New Orleans has yet to fully recover. Adams added that his roots shape his leadership in Bowie where he brings a piece of New Orleans culture to local events. WJLA
