EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Oct. 24, students, faculty, and community members gathered at the Beacon for Rich With Love: Building Bridges of Justice, Memory & Hope to honor Lt. Richard Collins' legacy. The event, co-hosted by Bowie State University and the University of Maryland, featured a documentary and open discussions that empowered a new generation of social justice advocates.  Bowie State University
  • Senior honors student Allissa Barnes at Bowie State University has become a leader who works on improving campus life—including fixing elevator issues and dining concerns—and she has served in the Student Government Association and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Barnes plans to attend law school to help young people before they reach court—she credits her mentors and parents for inspiring her journey.  Bowie State University
  • Bowie State University celebrated its 160th anniversary and 90 years of Homecoming with a week of events from Oct. 26 to Nov. 1 that featured a gospel concert, a parade led by Tony Award-winning artist Myles Frost ’21—uniting students, alumni and local residents—and a sold-out football game where the Bulldogs lost by one point. More than 6,000 people joined the festivities that honored the university's legacy and community pride.  Bowie State University
  • Bowie State University hosted a screening of the documentary 'Thriving: Black Men in Higher Education' on October 20 at the James E. Proctor Building to honor Black men pursuing careers in law, engineering and therapy—faculty and student panelists then discussed how mentorship and community support help them succeed.  Bowie State University
  • Bowie State University alumni Jesseki Kelly and Jasmine Tolson returned to their alma mater to guide math students and strengthen the math department—Kelly works as a program administrative specialist while Tolson, an assistant professor who received an award, plans to expand her advanced calculus classes. Their shared commitment shows how former students continue to build a strong future for the university.  Bowie State University

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Saturday, November 8, 2025, George Washington Hospital will offer low-dose CT scan lung cancer screenings for high-risk patients from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.—a quick, noninvasive test that may help catch lung cancer early, with eight Maryland clinics and others in Virginia and Washington DC also participating.  WJLA
  • Cardinal Robert McElroy, the Catholic Archbishop of Washington, will undergo surgery on Nov. 13 to remove non-aggressive cancer cells—he expects to resume full duties two weeks later after asking for prayers during his recent convocation.  WJLA

SPORTS NEWS

  • BJ Mensah, a power tumbler on the U.S. National Team and Bowie State student from Harlem, is set to compete at the World Championships in Pamplona, Spain this November & he credits his mother, coach, and local staff for helping him balance athletics and academics.  Bowie State University

    A two-day celebration of Bowie’s newest destination for convenience and chef-driven food with Dash In also celebrating Bowie community organizations with more than $15,000 in donations to Bowie High School, Bowie Interfaith Pantry, Bowie State University Green Ambassadors, OurSpace World, Inc. and Prince George’s County Fire Department and EMS.
