CRIME NEWS

  • A Bowie man, Herber Keith Mason Jr. (58) was charged with second-degree murder after fatally shooting Benjamin Francis (59) of Lanham on Sunday evening near Rockport Lane in unincorporated Bowie, with investigators stating the two men knew each other and had an argument that turned violent.  WJLA
  • Hugo Hernandez-Mendez, 35, was held without bond at his first court appearance in Prince George’s County after being charged with murdering 19-year-old Da’Cara Thompson—who was driven to his Bowie home on Aug. 22 and later found near Route 50—while investigators work to piece together her final hours.  WTOP

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local leaders reported that unemployment in Prince George’s County is higher and there are 23,000 fewer jobs now than in 2019—before the COVID pandemic affected the region. Walter Simmons—president and CEO of Employ Prince George’s—said that vulnerabilities in federal and higher education funding may lead to lower pay for returning workers and cause youth unemployment to remain high in some districts.  WTOP

  • A program through The ARC is giving mental health help to people with intellectual challenges by offering tailored therapy in community settings — like virtual sessions and park visits that make clients more comfortable.
